Hello

We have several courses (usually set as learning paths) where we require a prerequisite course to be completed prior to be able to register for the course.

Unfortunately the current prerequisite settings only allows selecting one (or more) courses as prerequisites but in case more are selected, the learner is required to complete all listed prereqs.

For some courses we have several options the learners can take as a prerequisite so we’re in a need to have the OR option in the prerequisite settings. If we select all possible prereq courses, the learners are forced to have completed all not just any of the list.

We tried using a milestone in the learning path with the content of the prerequisite course but it backfired since the learners gained access to the prerequisite content for free in case they did not met the conditions and hadn’t the prereq content completed beforehand.

We need a way to ensure learners won’t register for a course without prerequisites met or gain access to more purchasable content as a part of another course.

Thanks for looking into this!

Regards

Anna

Hi Anna,

I have reached out to my Implementation team to see if they have come across this scenario before and if they have come up with a clever configuraion option to facilitate your requirement.

While waiting for their thoughts I have two ideas which may help, but it requires manually provisioning of the content after either one of the prerequisite content items is completed.

  1. Create a Manager Notification that will send an email every time someone completes either of the prerequisite content items. You could have a text page at the end of the two prerequisite content items informing the learner that the LMS admin has been informed that they have met the prerequisites and the course will be provided to them shortly.
  2. You could create a Google / MS form and iframe the form into a text page, as the last page, in the prerequisite courses. On populating the form you can configure the corresponding spreadsheet to send an email every time a new record is captured to inform one of your team that a prerequisite has been met and the course needs to be provisioned to the learner. Similarly to option 1 above it would be important to let the learner know that the next course will be made availale to them shortly.

If I hear back from my implementation team of a more automated system I will let you know, but hopefully this will give you something to think about for now.

Kind regards

Jon

This has been a huge issue for us as well. There are no OR options in TI anywhere it appears...we can’t use it for Credly badges, prerequisites….

I have several suggestions in for this and they have upvotes, but I haven’t heard of any movement on adding this feature.

Hi @afenclova

I am working on a configuration option for this as there may be a way to do this via a Learning Path whithout giving the learner access to all the prerequisite content.

In order to build out the scenario can you please let me know if the piece of content that has the prerequisites, is a purchasable piece of content, or if it is free once the learner completes one of the prerequisites?

Thanks a lot

Jon

Hi @afenclova

I have another question for you as I play around with the requirement above.

Can you please confirm if the learners who you want to take content item 1 or 2 as a prerequisite for item 3. If this is the case I believe i have a solution that would work for you.

best regards

Jon

We also would like to see if we can have more flexibility with these options. We would like to set AND OR functions so we can say

complete Course 1 AND Course 2

OR

complete Course 1 OR Course 2.

This should also be flexible enough that we can add courses, learning paths, or events.

Thank you @grace.filkins

Thank you for the additional information and I can see you have already added this info to THIS idea which I am monitoring.

There are so many potential scenarios around this request it is difficult to advice the best approach using Learning Paths as a short term solution.

Knowing more about your specific use case would help: eg

  1. Are all learners in a panorama
  2. Is there a cost for the prerequisite options
  3. Is there a cost for the Content that has the pre-requisites etc.

Knowing the above would help determine if my idea is workable for you.

Warmest regards

Jon
