I know only that my company wants to start adopting LTI.  I have started w ChatGPT and moving into LinkedIn Learning.

ChatGPT 4.o had this to say to start the conversation….

Why Choose LTI:

  1. Interoperability:

    • LTI allows seamless integration of third-party tools and platforms (e.g., video conferencing tools, simulation apps) directly into your LMS.
    • Ideal for leveraging external tools without duplicating content.
  2. Modern Standards:

    • LTI supports modern, web-based learning tools and is often more compatible with cloud-based environments.
    • Works well for SaaS platforms and decentralized learning ecosystems.
  3. Real-Time Data Exchange:

    • Enables real-time interaction and data transfer (e.g., live quizzes, video feedback) between the tool and the LMS.
    • Supports a better learner experience with dynamic content.
  4. Ease of Use:

    • Focuses on simplifying integration and reducing administrative overhead.
    • No need to export/import files as with SCORM.

Just a note to set the record straight.

Why People Might Conflate LTI with SCORM 4.0:

Both standards aim to improve compatibility and interoperability in e-learning, and LTI has been widely adopted in modern LMS platforms where SCORM used to dominate. However, LTI addresses tool integration, while SCORM remains focused on content.

If there were to be a "SCORM 4.0," it would likely aim to bridge these differences, but as of now, LTI and SCORM are distinct and complementary standards, not evolutionary steps in the same lineage.

There is not now, nor are there plans to be a SCORM 4.0.

Following! Would love to know more about LTI as well!

Hi @charles.zimmerman and @LMS Whisperer

LTI is basically a protocol for integrating two or more learning applications. LTI in and of itself does not do anything, it just allows you to integrate Ti with external learning tools, eg assessment tools.

TI Currently supports LTI 1.2 and we are currently in the investigation stage of upgrading to LTI 1.3.

See THIS Idea for more information on LTI.

I see LTI similar to AI, rather than ask “What can I use LTI for?”, you should be asking, “I need to integrate with XXX platform, does LTI assist this integration”
