Summary:
Do you sell Training Credits to your clients to dispense to their learners for accessing content? Have you noted that it is not possible to purchase a Learning Path via Training Credits? By setting a Microcourse as a prerequisite for a Learning Path, it will allow the learner to purchase the Microcourse via credits and will give them access to the required Learning Path. Let’s dive in!
Requirement Overview:
If any of these requirements fit your end goal, this may be the play for you.
-
Requirement 1: Allocate training credits to your learners in a panorama to allow the purchase of content not freely available in the panorama
-
Requirement 2: Allow learners in a panorama to purchase courses and Learning Paths via their training credits
Functional area to be used:
- Microcourse
- Prerequisites
- Training Credits
- Panorama Purchasable Content
Core Functionality Configurations:
Description:
Create a Microcourse and enter the required Training Credits needed for purchase. In the Learning Path that needs to be purchased, add the Microcourse as a prerequisite for access to the Learning Path.
Microcourse Configuration:
- Create a Microcourse with at least one text page. On the Microcourse Detail Page, make sure to add details informing the learner that purchasing this course via training credits will give them access to the required Learning Path. Some ideas for how you can add this detail would be through the Microcourse description, the detail page image, a detail page tab, or within a custom detail page sidebar.
- In the Microcourse, add a text page and enter instructions for the learner, as well as a URL to the Learning Path that is accessible once the Microcourse is completed.
- Go to the Enrollment Step and enter the number of credits that the learner needs to purchase the Microcourse. This should be equal to the number of credits that the Learning Path would cost.
- If you would like to give the option to purchase the Microcourse via Ecommerce, enter the $ cost of the course and enable the Make Purchasable setting.
Learning Path Configuration:
- Create the Learning Path with milestones and content the way you normally would.
- On the Enrollment Step, under the Prerequisite Content section, add the Microcourse.
Panorama Purchasable Content Configuration:
- Within the Panorama, go to Courses > All Courses, then in the top right click the gear icon and choose Manage Content.
- Under Access Settings, enter the name of the Learning Path.
- Under Purchasable Content, enter the name of the Microcourse the learner needs to purchase, with credits to get access to the Learning Path.
NOTE: Ensure the setting to allow purchasable content in the panorama is enabled.
- By setting the Microcourse as purchasable and as the Learning Path prerequisite, access to the Learning Path will be blocked until the learner has purchased the Microcourse. The Learning Path will display the following information on the catalog page.
NOTE: The message can be changed in the Platform Translations area. Any updates to the Translation field will apply globally across your site. Something to consider carefully if you use prerequisites for other use cases.
Learner Experience
- Upon landing on the Dashboard, the learner will see the Microcourse which they can purchase with credits - see below a sample of a the Microcourse in the catalog widget:
- Clicking on View Details will bring them to the Detail Page where the Microcourse can be purchased with credits.
- Once the learner meets the completion criteria of the Microcourse, the Learning Path will be available for the learner to start.
- See below a quick video on the learner experience, but you can customize this to your own requirements.
Risk and Mitigation Strategy
- On the Learner Dashboard, make it as clear as possible that purchasing the Microcourse will give access to the Learning Path.
- This flow will only work if the learner is in a panorama.
- If sublicenses are being used, be sure to add the Microcourse and the Learning Path to the sublicense.
